This week, Russell Wilson and Malik Nabers finally had an opportunity to start playing organized ball together. Throughout the New York Giants’ offseason activities, Nabers has been nursing a toe injury.
As a result, the Giants have rolled without the star wide receiver, giving Wilson an opportunity to build chemistry with his other weapons.
That didn’t change the expectations, though. Once Nabers was healthy and ready to suit up again, it was clear he would be Wilson’s top target. So far, that connection seems to be solid.
“Malik and I have a great relationship, actually,” Wilson told reporters. “He has the locker right next to me, and we got to spend a lot of time in San Diego together.”
Although Nabers and Wilson didn’t practice together in OTAs and minicamp, the veteran quarterback hosted a large group of other QBs and pass-catchers out West for some training sessions ahead of camp. Since Wilson started to get to work with Nabers, the veteran quarterback realized the young star has all of the right qualities in a successful young wideout.

“I just love how he works,” Wilson said of Nabers.
“A lot of the time, you get talented guys, and their work ethic is super high, but can they keep it consistent? That’s what you’re always looking for, and I think his consistency, his love for the game, his consistency in his playmaking, his tenacity for the game, his leadership, his thought process, communication, he’s not shy, he’s great in the meetings. Anytime you have a young star receiver … It’s the communication that you always have, right? But you want those guys to be communicating and active, and he does a tremendous job of that. He’s communicating to the other guys what he sees and what he would do. All these different things.”
Being in the league since 2012, Wilson has played with many different players on all types of levels. It’s unclear where he would rank Nabers next to the wideouts Wilson played with in the past, but the Giants’ QB made two things clear recently. One: he chose to go to New York because Nabers would be his top target.
Two: Wilson believes that Nabers is set to produce like the best wideout in the league. That type of prediction isn’t necessarily far-fetched.
With a shaky quarterback situation, the Giants still landed 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns out of Nabers. He was a Pro Bowler in his very first season with the team. When the Giants got to work for the first time on Wednesday, Wilson and Nabers connected for multiple scores. It wasn’t perfect, but the duo seems to be clicking early on.
“I think there’s going to be more to it, and we’re going to keep developing,” Wilson finished. “Obviously, we’re just getting started and just kind of warming up and getting hot, but we’re excited to work together.”
