The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in the league. They have a loaded lineup with multiple star players, including Kyle Tucker.
But there’s one massive hole in Chicago’s lineup: third base. Prospect Matt Shaw was seemingly looked at as the future at the hot corner, but he’s struggled tremendously this year. With Shaw struggling, the Cubs need to find his short-term replacement.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently urged the Cubs to pursue a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez to replace the struggling Shaw.

“The Matt Shaw experience has fallen well short of expectations this season and Vidal Bruján hasn’t exactly been an upgrade at the hot corner,” Kline wrote. “Chicago has the foundations of a killer infield between Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Michael Busch, but third base remains a relative weak point and a glaring hole in the lineup.
“Now just plug the red-hot Eugenio Suárez into that spot and suddenly Chicago’s offense starts to feel like it can really keep pace with the heavy hitters in L.A. Suárez, 33, is enjoying his best season to date for the Arizona Diamondbacks, slashing .250/.320/.569 with 31 home runs. That is the second most in the National League, trailing only Shohei Ohtani’s 32.”
Suárez would be the perfect answer at the hot corner in the Windy City. He’s the added pop the Cubs could use in their loaded lineup. The slugger would replace the Cubs’ biggest weakness and turn it into a massive strength.
The only issue is that Suárez’s market is expected to be quite hot. The New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and Seattle Mariners could find themselves in the race to acquire him, too.
If the Cubs are willing to part ways with a solid prospect package, they could make this deal happen. They’ll just need to outbid a few desperate teams.
