NY Giants’ Offseason Grade Shocks With Claim About 1 Move

When grading the New York Giants’ offseason, ESPN’s Seth Walder was generous.

According to the NFL writer, the Giants were above average—just didn’t quite ace it. Coming off a bad season, I’d say that’s a pretty positive sign heading into a fresh start.

What stood out the most for the Giants beyond getting a “B” grade was the likable move that was highlighted as the best, in Walder’s opinion: signing Jameis Winston.

The Giants entered the offseason needing a quarterback,” Walder wrote. “They acquired three. In free agency, they brought in both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston for a combined $14 million in cap space. It was a good bargain.

“At the time, they didn’t know whether they’d be able to draft a first-round QB. Wilson raises the floor and Winston the ceiling. Even though neither is the team’s future quarterback, why not try both at that cost?”

The quarterback conversation has been all over the place when it comes to the Giants. While it’s become clear that Wilson will enter the first week of the 2025 NFL season as the starting quarterback, the national media’s opinion suggests it will only be a matter of time before Wilson takes a seat.

Will it be for Winston? The overwhelming majority would place their bets on the rookie Jaxson Dart getting the jump over the veteran.

New York has two veteran rentals with plenty of experience as a QB1 in the NFL. They also have a player who could be their franchise quarterback for years to come. It’s a very unique situation, but it’s sort of a wildcard scenario, considering the Giants aren’t moving like a rebuilding team starting slow.

They beefed up the defensive line, and the presence of the superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers has the Giants hoping to put the rest of the NFC on notice this year.

Sure, they had a rough go-round last season, but the Daniel Jones experience is officially over. Total consistency might not be found under center this year, but the Giants are hopeful they have at least one guy who can get the job done.

Winston certainly has a shot at getting on the field for New York if Wilson struggles. However, signs were reportedly pointing to Dart competing for the primary backup spot, as he started gaining second-team reps in spring practices. The depth chart is far from finalized, so only training camp will determine what happens next. For the time being, the Giants can feel good about their decent offseason.
