The New York Yankees need to find an upgrade in the infield. DJ LeMahieu has underperformed and his playing at second base has Jazz Chisholm Jr. playing third base, where he is not as strong a defender.

The Yankees could solve both of those problems by trading for a third baseman and moving Chisholm back to second base. MLB insider Bob Nightengale revealed that the Yankees are eyeing Eugenio Suárez at the trade deadline.

“The American League is wide open, and the Yankees are poised to take full advantage of the opportunity,” Nightengale wrote for USA Today. “They badly need a third baseman or a second baseman, and realize there’s 0% chance that the Red Sox answering their prayers by trading them Alex Bregman. They are keeping a close eye on Suarez and Kiner-Falefa, which would allow them to move Jazz Chisholm back to second base.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in danger of falling out of contention before the July 31 trade deadline. They are still within striking distance of a postseason spot right now, but have some key players injured. Corbin Burnes and Corbin Carroll are both hurt, making it tougher to stay alive in the postseason race.

Suárez is a prime candidate to be dealt if the team decides to sell. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018 and is playing on a club option this year. He will be a free agent after the season and has some good trade value. He is slashing .251/.323/.569 in 78 games. He leads the National League in RBI entering play on Wednesday. He has 25 home runs as well.

Adding his bat to the middle of the Yankees’ lineup could go a long way in fixing their offensive woes. The veteran slugger has hit 301 career home runs and could help lead the Yankees through October. He is a former All-Star and can be an everyday third baseman.

Adding Suárez would essentially end LeMahieu’s time as a starter for the Yankees. He has been on the team since 2019. He has played in 706 games for the Yankees. He has been an All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glover with the team. However, he is clearly out of his prime and likely better suited for a bench role.
