Before the group stage starts on Thursday down in Mexico City with the home team hosting South Africa, there really isn’t anything to be upset about, right?

Wrong.

As the days got closer to the World Cup beginning and teams started loading into their hand-picked cities across the continent where they’ll have their hub for the next month at least, a single, inflammatory remark from a British poster ignited an online war that has not stopped in the past 48 hours.

“These US stadiums have a horrible aesthetic,” posted the British fan on X.

Since their post two days ago, over 15 million have viewed it, along with over 1,000 responses.

What has transpired is mainly British posters going up against Americans, pitting their athletic venues against one another.

For the Americans, they’ve prided themselves on their state-of-the-art stadiums, along with college football stadiums that they believe match or succeed the atmosphere for clubs in England and across the United Kingdom.

For the old-fashioned Brits, their counter-argument has been that even though venues like SoFi Stadium or Mercedes-Benz Stadium might be better in terms of comfort and spectacle, that they lack the “soul” of grounds across Europe that have been standing for over a century.

Although England and the U.S. faced off at the World Cup four years ago in Qatar, there might be more hatred on social media this time around when they aren’t playing.
