Trump to Cheer on Knicks

Trump confirmed on Friday that he would to attend Monday night’s matchup between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, one of the city’s biggest sports events in decades.

It will be the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999 and is expected to draw massive crowds to the arena. If Trump attends as planned, he would be the first sitting president to attend a Finals game, according to the NBA.

Trump, who gave up his lifelong New York residency for Florida in 2019, has already attended a number of major sporting events during his second term, including the 2025 Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and golf’s Ryder Cup in the New York City suburbs, where he was cheered, and last year’s U.S. Open men’s tennis championship in Queens, where he was booed and blamed for long security lines.

Trump’s planned attendance has prompted extensive security involving the Secret Service, NYPD and other agencies around Madison Square Garden and the surrounding blocks.

The Knicks said people going to the game should arrive at least two hours before tipoff for airport-style security screening and comply with a strict no-bag policy. A Game 3 watch party outside Madison Square Garden was also cancelled.

Some Knicks fans have been angered by the disruption, though others have dismissed the criticism.

Authorities did not immediately indicate whether the stabbing would affect security plans for the game.

Newsweek has contacted the White House and Secret Service for comment via emails sent outside regular business hours.
